DC Log Cabin Opposes ‘Prostitution Free Zones’ Bill

WASHINGTON, DC –WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans issued the following statement in opposition to a bill recently introduced by Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander entitled the Prostitution Free Zone Amendment Act of 2011.

“The simple idea of a prostitution-free zone creates the illusion that there are areas within the District where prostitution is allowed in some legal fashion,” said DC Log Cabin President Robert Turner II.  “While we concur with groups such as the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance in calling on the D.C. Council to defeat the bill, our reasoning is much different.

“This is not a bill to curb prostitution.  If it were, it would target larger areas than ones often populated by loitering offenders.  This is an election year gimmick by a councilmember who for the last three years has proven indifferent to the needs of her constituents in Ward 7.  Prostitution is illegal in every square inch of the District.  I guess Ms. Alexander wants to make certain areas ‘super-duper illegal,’” Turner concluded.

Councilmember Harry Thomas Must Resign

Councilmember Harry Thomas Must Resign

WASHINGTON, DC – In June, DC Log Cabin Republicans called for Harry Thomas to resign. They do so again today. For months, the citizens of the District of Columbia have known that Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr. had been accused of steering hundreds of thousands of dollars from DC earmarks to non-profits in which he personally and politically benefited. Today, as a result of research first compiled by Tim Day, former candidate for Ward 5 DC Council in 2010 and current candidate for At-Large DC Council, plus the subsequent actions made by the DC Attorney General’s office, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, the FBI raided the home of Councilmember Thomas this morning.

“Log Cabin member Tim Day got the ball rolling,” said DC Log Cabin President Robert Turner II. “Thanks to his tenacity and revelations, we’re finally starting to get to the bottom of how Mr. Thomas has used his office to enrich himself at taxpayer expense. It is revolting on many levels,” Turner advises. “We applaud the few members of the council who have called on Thomas to resign. But there are 8 still who sit in silence. They need to stand up for real ethics reform. And that can only begin with resignation of Harry Thomas,” concluded Turner.

Press Release: DC Log Cabin Congratulates LCR Member Marc Morgan on His Washington Blade Award

DC LOG CABIN CONGRATULATES LCR MEMBER MARC MORGAN ON HIS WASHINGTON BLADE AWARD
WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans would like to congratulate one of its members, Marc Morgan, who was voted by the readers of the Washington Blade as the Best Gay D.C. Politician in their 10th annual “Best of Gay D.C.” issue. The award was announced last evening at Hotel Helix, where over 300 friends and supporters gathered for special tributes to Frank Kameny and Chris Crowe, who both died earlier this year. Morgan currently serves as President of the LeDroit Park Civic Association and lost a bid for City Council in Ward 1 last year.

“We congratulate Mr. Morgan on his award. It is obvious that the community has noticed his efforts for LeDroit Park and Ward 1,” said President Robert Turner. “I also find it amusing that he beat out the two sitting gay members of the Council. Clearly, David Catania (I-At Large) and Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) are getting lazy and taking gay voters for granted. It appears that Washingtonians are looking elsewhere for leadership within the gay community. Perhaps the city council should have police arrest fewer people for expired license tags and more for gay bashing.”

DC LOG CABIN ENDORSES MARA FOR SPECIAL ELECTION

WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans unanimously endorsed Ward 1 School Board Member Patrick Mara for the At-Large City Council seat in the April 26th special election, in a membership vote at Wednesday’s chapter meeting.  In their endorsement, DC Log Cabin Republicans indicated their intentions to assist the Mara campaign with volunteers and financial support, including a fundraiser set for April 5th.

.
“Patrick is an amazing candidate and a great friend not only to Log Cabin, but also to the entire LGBT community,” said President Robert Turner II.  “He is the only candidate who actually testified in support of bringing marriage equality to the District,” he continued.  “Recent events have shown that the Council needs a watchdog looking out for taxpayers, and we believe Patrick Mara will provide that oversight.  Let’s bring common sense back to the Council,” Turner concluded.

Bob Kabel, Chairman of the District of Columbia Republican Committee said in a statement, “Patrick is the only candidate for the April 26th special election who has a proven record on gay and lesbian issues.  He vigorously lobbied Republican Members of Congress with me to protect DC’s marriage equality laws.”
