DC Log Cabin Opposes ‘Prostitution Free Zones’ Bill

WASHINGTON, DC –WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans issued the following statement in opposition to a bill recently introduced by Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander entitled the Prostitution Free Zone Amendment Act of 2011.

“The simple idea of a prostitution-free zone creates the illusion that there are areas within the District where prostitution is allowed in some legal fashion,” said DC Log Cabin President Robert Turner II.  “While we concur with groups such as the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance in calling on the D.C. Council to defeat the bill, our reasoning is much different.

“This is not a bill to curb prostitution.  If it were, it would target larger areas than ones often populated by loitering offenders.  This is an election year gimmick by a councilmember who for the last three years has proven indifferent to the needs of her constituents in Ward 7.  Prostitution is illegal in every square inch of the District.  I guess Ms. Alexander wants to make certain areas ‘super-duper illegal,’” Turner concluded.

DC LOG CABIN RESPONDS TO GLAA’S CANDIDATE RATINGS

WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance (GLAA) released their rating results for the upcoming Washington, DC City Council primary elections.  The results, which included perfect +10 for Jim Graham and Phil Mendelson, also included a +6 for Ward 5 candidate Harry Thomas Jr.  Gay Republicans Marc Morgan and Timothy Day scored +3 and +1.5 respectively.  Of the other results, the only non-incumbent to score higher than the incumbent was Vincent Gray. who was endorsed in 2006 by the GLAA.
.

Robert Turner, President of the DC Log Cabin Republicans made the following statement following the release of the GLAA ‘gay-supportiveness’ rating results on Wednesday.  “It’s outrageous that GLAA thinks they can rate two gay men so low for “gay-supportiveness” and get away with it without anyone asking questions.  This doesn’t pass the smell test.  If GLAA actually put out ratings based on community activism and not party affiliation, we might have some real insight into who will stand up for LGBT rights once on the City Council.”

The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans has endorsed both Marc Morgan in Ward 1 and Tim Day in Ward 5.
