DC Log Cabin-Endorsed Candidates Sweep Primaries;
Members Take Top RNC Spots

WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans congratulates its endorsed candidates, all of whom won their respective races in Tuesday night’s primary, including longtime member and DC GOP Chair Bob Kabel, who won a contested primary for National Committeeman. In Ward 7, Ron Moten, won over 57% of the vote to earn the right to face incumbent Councilmember Yvette Alexander in November. Uncontested races were won by Mary Brooks Beatty, running for At-Large Member of the DC Council, and Nelson Rimensnyder, running for DC “Shadow Senator.” Jill Homan, also a member, won a close election to serve as the District’s National Committeewoman on the Republican National Committee.

Robert Turner, President of the DC Chapter, congratulated all of the candidates and expressed excitement at the prospects for additional victories in November. “DC Log Cabin looks forward to actively supporting Ron Moten and Mary Brooks Beatty in their races this fall. Together with a Tim Day victory in next month’s Ward 5 special election, these contests will show our party’s renewed energy in the District, and DC Log Cabin will do all we can to restore trust and commonsense leadership to the Council.”

Turner praised Kabel and Homan for their victories, noting that the District will be the first jurisdiction to have two Log Cabin members serving simultaneously as Committeeman and Committeewoman on the Republican National Committee. “Bob and Jill are friends of Log Cabin and we look forward to working with them to represent our core principles on the RNC.” Turner thanked fellow member Teri Galvez for her honest and spirited campaign for National Committeewoman and newcomer Jordan Gehrke for introducing good ideas into the debate.

DC Log Cabin Opposes ‘Prostitution Free Zones’ Bill

DC Log Cabin Opposes ‘Prostitution Free Zones’ Bill

WASHINGTON, DC –WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans issued the following statement in opposition to a bill recently introduced by Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander entitled the Prostitution Free Zone Amendment Act of 2011.

“The simple idea of a prostitution-free zone creates the illusion that there are areas within the District where prostitution is allowed in some legal fashion,” said DC Log Cabin President Robert Turner II.  “While we concur with groups such as the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance in calling on the D.C. Council to defeat the bill, our reasoning is much different.

“This is not a bill to curb prostitution.  If it were, it would target larger areas than ones often populated by loitering offenders.  This is an election year gimmick by a councilmember who for the last three years has proven indifferent to the needs of her constituents in Ward 7.  Prostitution is illegal in every square inch of the District.  I guess Ms. Alexander wants to make certain areas ‘super-duper illegal,’” Turner concluded.
