DC Log Cabin: Mayor Gray Must Go!

WASHINGTON, DC – In what is sure to sound like a broken record, the DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans calls for the resignation of yet another elected official. Mayor Vincent Gray’s 2010 campaign has been plagued with complaints and allegations of unethical behavior. This week, three campaign workers pled guilty to charges of running a shadow campaign. U.S. Attorney Machen speaks of the campaign as being compromised by backroom deals, secret payments and a flood of unreported cash.

In an about face from previous Council scandals this year, Councilmembers Muriel Bowser, David Catania, and Mary Cheh have called for Mayor Gray’s resignation. “I applaud those Councilmembers who have called for the mayor to step down. Perhaps they are as tired as their constituents are of the mess in the Wilson Building,” said Robert Turner II, President of the DC Log Cabin Republicans. If forced out of office, Gray will become the third elected official to step down this year.

While no formal allegations have been presented to the Mayor, his entire administration has had an odor of disreputable behavior.  “The Mayor now wants us to distinguish between his job as mayor and how he went about getting there,” said Turner, adding, “When it comes to governing the nation’s capital, the ends cannot justify the means.  One month ago, I asked who’s next.  We now have our answer.”

Log Cabin Republicans is a national organization started in 1977, with state and local chapters nationwide, which believes in low taxes, limited government, strong defense, free markets, personal responsibility, and individual liberty.  Log Cabin Republicans educates our party about why inclusion wins and that opposing gay and lesbian equality is inconsistent with the GOP’s core principles of smaller government and personal freedom.  The DC Chapter holds monthly meetings, supports inclusive local Republican candidates, and sponsors monthly social gatherings.  For more information, please visit www.dclogcabin.org.

DC LOG CABIN CONGRATULATES LCR MEMBER MARC MORGAN ON HIS WASHINGTON BLADE AWARD
WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans would like to congratulate one of its members, Marc Morgan, who was voted by the readers of the Washington Blade as the Best Gay D.C. Politician in their 10th annual “Best of Gay D.C.” issue. The award was announced last evening at Hotel Helix, where over 300 friends and supporters gathered for special tributes to Frank Kameny and Chris Crowe, who both died earlier this year. Morgan currently serves as President of the LeDroit Park Civic Association and lost a bid for City Council in Ward 1 last year.

“We congratulate Mr. Morgan on his award. It is obvious that the community has noticed his efforts for LeDroit Park and Ward 1,” said President Robert Turner. “I also find it amusing that he beat out the two sitting gay members of the Council. Clearly, David Catania (I-At Large) and Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) are getting lazy and taking gay voters for granted. It appears that Washingtonians are looking elsewhere for leadership within the gay community. Perhaps the city council should have police arrest fewer people for expired license tags and more for gay bashing.”

Statement on David Catania Remarks

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Robert Turner

STATEMENT ON DAVID CATANIA REMARKS

WASHINGTON, DC – Following the remarks of Councilman David Catania insulting many of his constituents and likely now-former supporters, DC Log Cabin President Robert Turner II released the following statement:

“Last week, Councilman David Catania was quoted in a Washington Post article about a recent report distributed by the DC Republican Party detailing potential violations of campaign finance rules in connection with the constituent services funds of various councilmembers, in which he said, ‘there doesn’t appear to be any Republican Party in the District outside of Georgetown.’ As a former Republican, Mr. Catania must know that Republicans, while few in the District, are spread all over this city. We are a cross-section of our communities, being of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientation, and economic status. To insinuate otherwise is simply ignorant.

“Catania could not have won his first election as a Republican At-Large City Councilman if the Republicans were limited to Georgetown; it was thanks to the support of many Republicans across the city that he beat Arrington Dixon. He won our support because he campaigned to stand up to corruption and business as usual. We must now ask if he’s at home with ‘constituent services’ funds that are effectively slush funds for well-connected insiders. Has the former paladin of good government sold out?”
