DC Log Cabin Opposes ‘Prostitution Free Zones’ Bill

WASHINGTON, DC –WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans issued the following statement in opposition to a bill recently introduced by Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander entitled the Prostitution Free Zone Amendment Act of 2011.

“The simple idea of a prostitution-free zone creates the illusion that there are areas within the District where prostitution is allowed in some legal fashion,” said DC Log Cabin President Robert Turner II.  “While we concur with groups such as the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance in calling on the D.C. Council to defeat the bill, our reasoning is much different.

“This is not a bill to curb prostitution.  If it were, it would target larger areas than ones often populated by loitering offenders.  This is an election year gimmick by a councilmember who for the last three years has proven indifferent to the needs of her constituents in Ward 7.  Prostitution is illegal in every square inch of the District.  I guess Ms. Alexander wants to make certain areas ‘super-duper illegal,’” Turner concluded.

Log Cabin Republicans is a national organization started in 1977, with state and local chapters nationwide, which believes in low taxes, limited government, strong defense, free markets, personal responsibility, and individual liberty.  Log Cabin Republicans educates our party about why inclusion wins and that opposing gay and lesbian equality is inconsistent with the GOP’s core principles of smaller government and personal freedom.  The DC Chapter holds monthly meetings, supports inclusive local Republican candidates, and sponsors monthly social gatherings.  For more information, please visit www.dclogcabin.org.

Harry Thomas, Jr., The ‘King Of Misappropriations’ Is Finally Gone

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Robert Turner

Harry Thomas, The ‘King Of Misappropriations’ Is Finally Gone

WASHINGTON, DC – After two calls from DC Log Cabin Republicans last year for him to step down for the good of his constituents, Councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr. has finally agreed to do so. For more than a year, voters of the District of Columbia have been disserved by Ward 5 Councilman Harry Thomas, Jr.’s scandals and corruption charges, having been accused, and now charged with steering hundreds of thousands of dollars from DC earmarks to non-profits from which he personally and politically benefited. His decision to resign, though, has hardly been entirely voluntary. It comes as part of a deal made with Federal prosecutors in settlement of criminal allegations pending against Thomas concerning the same conduct which was the basis for the District’s civil suit settled last summer. The rules that regular citizens live by are finally being applied to Mr. Thomas.

“Today, as a result of research first compiled by DC Log Cabin member Tim Day, a former candidate for DC Council Ward 5 in 2010, the Council has one less ethical issue with which to be concerned. The bad news for the taxpayers is that we now must spend taxpayer dollars on a special election on top of our regularly scheduled elections this year. The good news is that the ‘King of Misappropriations’ is finally gone,” said DC Log Cabin President Robert Turner II.

“The people of Ward 5 deserve someone who will first and foremost tend to their issues and concerns, and not personal gain. It is now incumbent upon Republicans to show the voters of Ward 5 and the rest of the District where we as a Republican Party and our candidates for office stand on the issues that are important to them,” concluded Turner.

Press Release: DC Log Cabin Congratulates LCR Member Marc Morgan on His Washington Blade Award

DC LOG CABIN CONGRATULATES LCR MEMBER MARC MORGAN ON HIS WASHINGTON BLADE AWARD
WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans would like to congratulate one of its members, Marc Morgan, who was voted by the readers of the Washington Blade as the Best Gay D.C. Politician in their 10th annual “Best of Gay D.C.” issue. The award was announced last evening at Hotel Helix, where over 300 friends and supporters gathered for special tributes to Frank Kameny and Chris Crowe, who both died earlier this year. Morgan currently serves as President of the LeDroit Park Civic Association and lost a bid for City Council in Ward 1 last year.

“We congratulate Mr. Morgan on his award. It is obvious that the community has noticed his efforts for LeDroit Park and Ward 1,” said President Robert Turner. “I also find it amusing that he beat out the two sitting gay members of the Council. Clearly, David Catania (I-At Large) and Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) are getting lazy and taking gay voters for granted. It appears that Washingtonians are looking elsewhere for leadership within the gay community. Perhaps the city council should have police arrest fewer people for expired license tags and more for gay bashing.”

HARRY THOMAS, JR. MUST GO!

WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans echoes the outrage heard across the District when it was learned that Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr. had been accused of steering hundreds of thousands of dollars from DC earmarks to non-profits in which he personally and politically benefited. As a result, DC Attorney General Irvin Nathan investigated Mr. Thomas due to in part, former challenger Tim Day and the DC GOP’s request. The Attorney General has filed a civil charge against Mr. Thomas for $1 million dollars. Subsequently, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia and the FBI have both confirmed they are investigating Mr. Thomas as well.

“Log Cabin member Tim Day got the ball rolling,” said DC Log Cabin President Robert Turner II. “Thanks to his tenacity and revelations, we’re finally starting to get to the bottom of how Mr. Thomas has used his office to enrich himself at taxpayer expense. It is revolting on many levels,” Turner advises. “First, because Mr. Thomas abused the power of his office. Second, because he claimed that the money going to ‘Team Thomas’ to benefit kids was actually going to the ‘Harry Thomas luxury SUV fund’. Third, because in a time of gaping budget deficits, Harry Thomas, Jr. chose to pick the pockets of taxpayers in order to line his own.

“We join Patrick Mara, State Board of Education member for Ward One, in calling for Thomas’s resignation,” Mr. Turner continued! “The residents of DC will get no respect from Congress so long as we are represented by crooks like Harry Thomas. If he has any common decency left, he’ll resign!

Short of that, the city council has the authority to, and should remove him from office. So long as they let him stay, he tarnishes the reputation of our entire city government. Harry Thomas, Jr. must go!”

DC Log Cabin Condemns Mayor’s New Executive Pay Scale

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Robert Turner
June 1, 2011 (202) 253-1830 cell

DC LOG CABIN CONDEMNS MAYOR’S NEW EXECUTIVE PAY SCALE

WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans echoes the outrage heard across the District yesterday when it was reported that Mayor Vincent Gray introduced legislation last week to increase the salaries of certain city employees by $100,000, to a maximum of $279,000.  In addition to the 56% pay increase, the bill would also remove public hearings, along with congressional oversight from any contracts approved at the new level.
.
In a time of fully-loaded leased vehicles and nearly $400 million budget deficits, this is the last thing this city needs,” said President Robert Turner II.  “While it is important to bring in and keep good talent such as the police and fire chiefs, and the Superintendent of Schools, the Mayor perhaps needs a refresher that these are public sector jobs, paid for by the hard-earned tax dollars of the citizens of the District.  Is this why Mayor Gray is trying to raise taxes and cut social services for the poor?” he continued.
.
“Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is paid $199,790 per year.  However difficult any of the DC city government jobs are, none are so demanding that they justify $80K above and beyond what presidential cabinet secretaries make,” Turner concluded. It appears that the measure has little chance of advancing in its current iteration out of the Government Affairs Committee, chaired by Councilmember Mary Cheh, who said the bill was “DOA.”

DC Log Cabin Applauds Valiant Efforts of Mara

DC LOG CABIN APPLAUDS VALIANT EFFORTS OF MARA

WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans congratulates Patrick Mara for running a great campaign.  With just over twelve percent voting, it turned out to be a near historic low-voter turn out election.  Log Cabin is pleased that a majority of the precincts with a large concentration of LGBT voters were won by Mara.
.
“Of course we’re not pleased with the outcome, but we live in a democracy.  And barring anything major resulting from the provisional and special ballots casts, we congratulate Vincent Orange and wish him well,” said President Robert Turner II.  “But we are here to put the returning councilmember and the rest of the City Council on notice that we will be watching!  We don’t expect our elected officials to be perfect, just honest.  And there is a major shortage of that currently on the Council,” he continued.
.
“It really is surprising that the people chose the status quo when all they’ve been talking about for the last three months are the problems with the status quo.  They are not voting for anyone or anything new,” Turner concluded.
.
In spite of the narrow loss, Mara will continue to serve on the DC State Board of Education, representing Ward 1.

Mara Enters Race for Special Election

As many of you may know on April 26th, there will be a city wide special election to fill a vacancy on the DC City Council. There will be a special election because Kwame Brown vacated his At-Large Council position to be sworn in as the Council Chairman.

DC Log Cabin Republicans are pleased to announce that our friend, recently elected School Board Member Patrick Mara will run for the special election. Patrick does not have to resign from the School Board while running for this position. This is exciting news for DC Republicans and there are areas in which you may help.

The most urgent task is signature collecting. Patrick’s campaign will need to collect at least 3,000 signatures of DC voters by mid February and we need your help. If you are a DC voter, you may sign Patrick’s petition and help us circulate petitions. Click here for more information.

For more information about Patrick’s race, please check his website at www.PatrickMara.com. We will be updating DC LCRs in the days and weeks ahead regarding the campaign. Stay tuned!

DC Log Cabin Responds To GLAA’s Candidate Ratings

DC LOG CABIN RESPONDS TO GLAA’S CANDIDATE RATINGS

WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance (GLAA) released their rating results for the upcoming Washington, DC City Council primary elections.  The results, which included perfect +10 for Jim Graham and Phil Mendelson, also included a +6 for Ward 5 candidate Harry Thomas Jr.  Gay Republicans Marc Morgan and Timothy Day scored +3 and +1.5 respectively.  Of the other results, the only non-incumbent to score higher than the incumbent was Vincent Gray. who was endorsed in 2006 by the GLAA.
.

Robert Turner, President of the DC Log Cabin Republicans made the following statement following the release of the GLAA ‘gay-supportiveness’ rating results on Wednesday.  “It’s outrageous that GLAA thinks they can rate two gay men so low for “gay-supportiveness” and get away with it without anyone asking questions.  This doesn’t pass the smell test.  If GLAA actually put out ratings based on community activism and not party affiliation, we might have some real insight into who will stand up for LGBT rights once on the City Council.”

The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans has endorsed both Marc Morgan in Ward 1 and Tim Day in Ward 5.

DC LOG CABIN ENDORSES CANDIDATES FOR CITY COUNCIL

WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans recently voted to endorse the the four candidates who are running for the Republican nomination for City Council.  Those candidates are Marc Morgan, Ward 1; David Hedgepeth, Ward 3; Tim Day, Ward 5; and Jim DeMartino, Ward 6.  The vote occurred after the Board of Directors unanimously voted to endorse the candidates.

.
“We are fortunate to have such high caliber candidates running this year,” said President Robert Turner.  “Each candidate has presented himself and has had the opportunity to speak before and be questioned by our membership.  DC Log Cabin Republicans are excited to endorse our candidates and supporting them, we will work to bring a more sensible Council.  By helping to get these candidates elected, we will bring fiscal sanity back to the District of Columbia and support full equality for the District’s LGBT residents,” Turner concluded.
