Is the Trump administration the most LGBT-friendly in history, or the most anti-LGBT in history? Does Trump’s personal ease and relationships with gay people mean a new openness, or does it paper over old prejudices? How does the LGBT community fit into the new global right-populist trend?

Christian Whiton is a Senior Vice President at Banner Public Affairs, a communications and government relations firm. He is also Senior Fellow at the Center for the National Interest, a Washington, DC think tank that is a leading voice for strategic realism in U.S. foreign policy.

Christian can be followed here: @ChristianWhiton

Previously, Whiton was a State Department senior advisor during the Donald Trump and George W. Bush administrations.  In the Trump administration, Whiton was a senior advisor for strategic communications at the State Department. He advised the new administration on public diplomacy, media, and East Asia issues. On the presidential transition, he served as the media advisor for the incoming Secretary of State and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations during their Senate confirmations.

During the Bush administration, Whiton was a speechwriter for the Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs, and was later the deputy special envoy for North Korean human rights issues. He also focused on trade and financial issues.

Whiton has held communications and policy roles on several presidential campaigns, including the Giuliani (2008), Gingrich (2012), and Cruz (2016) campaigns.

Outside of government, Whiton has focused on trade, public affairs, corporate communications, and political risk analysis, including as a principal for DC International Advisory. From 1996-2000, he worked for the corporate finance practice of KPMG LLP, where he oversaw daily activities of mergers and acquisitions engagements.

Whiton earned undergraduate degrees in History and Economics from Tulane University. He holds an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.
