WASHINGTON, DC – The DC Chapter of Log Cabin Republicans echoes the outrage heard across the District yesterday when it was reported that Mayor Vincent Gray introduced legislation last week to increase the salaries of certain city employees by $100,000, to a maximum of $279,000.  In addition to the 56% pay increase, the bill would also remove public hearings, along with congressional oversight from any contracts approved at the new level.
In a time of fully-loaded leased vehicles and nearly $400 million budget deficits, this is the last thing this city needs,” said President Robert Turner II.  “While it is important to bring in and keep good talent such as the police and fire chiefs, and the Superintendent of Schools, the Mayor perhaps needs a refresher that these are public sector jobs, paid for by the hard-earned tax dollars of the citizens of the District.  Is this why Mayor Gray is trying to raise taxes and cut social services for the poor?” he continued.
“Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is paid $199,790 per year.  However difficult any of the DC city government jobs are, none are so demanding that they justify $80K above and beyond what presidential cabinet secretaries make,” Turner concluded. It appears that the measure has little chance of advancing in its current iteration out of the Government Affairs Committee, chaired by Councilmember Mary Cheh, who said the bill was “DOA.”
Log Cabin Republicans is a national organization started in 1977 that believe in low taxes, limited government, strong defense, free markets, personal responsibility, and individual liberty. The DC Chapter holds monthly meetings, supports local Republican candidates and sponsors monthly social gatherings. For more information, please visit http://www.dclogcabin.org.
